Using song name and quotes in books?

-Can you use song names and lyrics in books without paying royalites? I was thinking of in my book, making each chapter the name of a song or either lyrics from a song. Can I do that? You can use the titles of songs without any problems, but if the song is still in copyright (which just about everything from about 1920 onwards still is), you can't quote any recognisable portion of the lyrics without the permission of the copyright owner. Usually, this is the person who wrote the lyrics or the record company that first released the song. You will usually have to pay royalties or a flat fee. You probably won't get permission unless you're already a well-known author or the songwriter has heard of you and likes your work.

If you're not planning on publishing your book for money, you might get away without getting permission. Strictly speaking, you're still supposed to ask, but the copyright owner probably won't want to bother you if they don't think there's any money in it for them.Name of songs most often won't get you in to much of a hassle, for the lyrics, you would be best to use only partial lyrics and make sure to credit them. Put the lyrics you use in quotes and than underneath put the name of the artist or the name of the person that wrote the lyrics. In general that works, but no way they are going to let you get away with using the whole song.
@lone writer- actually the book i'm reading right now (the thing a brother knows) has some song lyrics in it

i'm not sure if you have to pay royalties for it but it's definitely possible to use them, just make sure you give the author credit by putting their name under it or something.
Naming the song should be fine--using the lyrics, not so much. It's difficult to get permission and expensive once you do, and publishers won't like the hassle. I would check out those sources for more information.
You can mention the name of the song, yes, but you can't use the lyrics.
