Okay, so I am confused about something in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix? Please answer!?

-So in the book and movie to see a Pestral you have to have seen death. But, Harry saw his mother die in front of him when he was a baby, so why wasn't he able to see a Pestral during years 2-4? And is it you have to actuall SEE someone die or know someone who has died? Thanks!JK Rowling said that you have to process and understand death in order to see a thestral. Harry did that once Cedric died, so he could see them.

Her website:

Why could Harry see the Thestrals 'Order of the Phoenix'? Shouldn't he have been able to see them much earlier, because he saw his parents/Quirrell/Cedric die?

I鈥檝e been asked this a lot. Harry didn鈥檛 see his parents die. He was in his cot at the time (he was just over a year old) and, as I say in 鈥楶hilosopher鈥檚 Stone鈥? all he saw was a flash of green light. He didn鈥檛 see Quirrell鈥檚 death, either. Harry had passed out before Quirrell died and was only told about it by Dumbledore in the last chapter.

He did, however, witness the murder of Cedric, and it is this that makes him able to see the Thestrals at last. Why couldn鈥檛 he see the Thestrals on his trip back to the train station? Well, I didn鈥檛 want to start a new mystery, which would not be resolved for a long time, at the very end of the fourth book. I decided, therefore, that until Harry is over the first shock, and really feels what death means (ie, when he fully appreciates that Cedric is gone forever and that he can never come back, which takes time, whatever age you are) he would not be able to see the Thestrals. After two months away from school during which he has dwelled endlessly on his memories of the murder and had nightmares about it, the Thestrals have taken shape and form and he can see them quite clearly.

EDIT: I don't think so. Because then everybody would be able to see the Thestrals because of their grandparents, uncles, aunts..all that stuff :PFirst, one small correction, it's "Thestrals" not "Pestrals."

Secondly, yes, you have to physically SEE someone die to see the thestrals.

Third, and this answer is taken directly from Jo Rowling's website on her FAQ page, if you care to look it up, Harry didn't really see his mother die; he was lying on his back, facing the ceiling in his crib. All he saw was a flash of green light. The movie version of this scene (if you've seen DH part 2) is slightly erroneous here. I never realized that until just now, actually!

I hope I helped you. I'll link to JK Rowling's (slightly outdated) website below. If you click on the paperclips, they'll lead to her FAQ page if you have more questions.|||Harry couldn't remember anything about his Mother's death so he could understand it, therefore he couldn't see the threstrals.

Btw, its threstral not pestral, but that would make a good spoof! lol|||You have to see it happen. I just don't think he remembered. Jo mentioned that somewhere I think. Good catch though!

And I think it's a Thestral.|||Cedric. And Pestrals were not the ones that brought them to the castle during years 2-4, other things did.
