-I've been toying around with werewolves, faeries, angels, witches, etc. and all I hear from people is "overused, overused, overused". Though I don't think that should stop me from writing, I do think that I could incorporate different mythical creatures into modern fantasy fiction. I like Japanese folklore like the kitsune, nekomata, yuki onna, etc. But can I write about them using a black protagonist set in America? Most people are used to European folklore so I'm wondering if this would work. Any ideas? If you suggest not using japanese folklore, then what mythical creatures should I use? And no flying monkeys, centaurs, mermaids, trolls or anything like that. I want them to look human.Japanese Folklore would be a good idea, since you're bringing something new to the table. I agree that angels, vampires, faeries etc are over used, so I think something other than that and Greek mythology (a craze which seems to be in full swing to my knowledge) would be refreshing and different.About your story.
Yes.
You could.
Absoloutely.
I read a story about Celtic folklore in America.
So it could work.
Mythical creatures?

Of course you can put Japanese folklore in an American setting! It doesn't matter what your setting is as long as you portray it well in the story. Different and original is the way to go!
You absolutely can do this. It sounds like a fun idea and one that people would enjoy reading. Go for it!
That sounds like a great idea. Go for it!
